Crochet Sugar Skull Wall hanging – Free Pattern

Free Crochet pattern for my Sugar Skull Wall Hanging

Ok so I’ve jumped on the wall hanging trend and I know its not Halloween just yet.. but I couldn’t resist sharing this pattern with you. It can be customised in whatever way tickles your fancy so have fun with it. I have added the way I made mine but as with all my patterns I encourage you to have fun with your colours and style it in a way that is unique to you.

Sugar Skull Wall Hanging Supplies :

For the banner

With Super Chunky yarn and 8 mm hook ch 2
Rw 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1 turn (2)
Rw 2: 2 sc in the 1st st, 2 sc in last, ch 1 turn (4)
Repeat row 2 until you have 22 stiches.
Next Row : 1 sc in each st across (22)
Repeat last row until you have reached your desired length. Remember to have enough of the banner to wrap and sew the wooden dowel
Fasten off leaving a long tail, wrap the top of the banner around the dowel and sew shut.

Crochet the skull – Each round is joined with a ss to the top of beginning chain 3 unless otherwise stated.

With White yarn and 4mm hook make a magic loop
Rd 1: 3 ch (counts as 1st st here and throughout entire patten) 11 dc into ring. (12)
Rd 2: 3 ch, 1 dc into the same stitch. 2 dc in each stitch around. (24)
Rd 3: 3 ch, 2 dc into next stitch. *1dc, 2dc, repeat from * around. (36)
Rd 4: 3 ch, 1 dc, 2dc. *1 dc, 1dc, 2dc, repeat from * around. (48)
Rd 5: 3 ch, 1dc, 1dc, 2dc. *1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 2dc, repeat from * around (60)
Rd 6: 3ch. 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 2dc. *1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 2dc, repeat from * around (72)

You will now begin to work in Rows.

Rw 1: Ch 3, 1 dc in next 19 stitches. Turn (20)
Rw 2: ch 3, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn (20)
Repeat row 2 twice more (20)
Rw 5: sc2tog twice, sc to last remaining 4 stiches, sc2tog twice. (16)
Fasten off your work leaving a long tail to sew your skull to your banner.

Eyes – make 2

With black yarn and 4mm hook make a magic ring.
Rd 1: 2 ch, 11 hdc into ring – change colour in last stitch. (12)
Rd 2: *Ch 1, sc, hdc, dc, dc, dc, hdc, sc all in the same stitch, ss to next st. Repeat from * 4 more times. (5 petals in total)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Nose

With black yarn and 4 mm hook make a magic ring.
Rd 1: 2 hdc, 2dc, ch1, 1 tr, ch1, 2 dc, 2hdc all into the ring. fasten off and weave in ends.

Tear Drops – Make as many as wish!

With Dk yarn and 4mm hook make a magic ring.
Rd 1: 4 dc, 2 sc, 1 tr, 2 sc. Join with a ss into center.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Roses – make as many as you wish!

With dk yarn and 4mm hook ch 12
Rw 1: 2 hdc in 2nd ch from hook. 2 hdc in next chain. 3 dc in each chain to end. Note: You will notice your rose starting to curl this is completey normal!
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Leaves – Make as may as you wish!

With dk yarn and 4mm hook Ch 6
Rw 1: 1sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1hdc, 2 dc, 6 dc in last ch from hook.
Now working on the opposite side of the chain 2dc, hdc in next and sc in last. Join to 1st sc.

Small Flowers – make as may as you wish!

With Dk yarn and 4mm hook make a magic ring.
Rd 1: Ch 2 ss into centre of the ring 5 times.
Fasten off and leave a tail to sew onto your banner.

You should now have all your components to attach to your Skull. I have sewn on a mouth with some black DK yarn! Sew your Skull to the banner

You can sew or use fabric glue to attach your decoration

I added some more decoration to the cheeks, a tear drop above the eyes and 4 small flowers in the headband. Voila!
